Vietnam

When applying for a visa you have to be careful. There are some sites that are just bullshit middlemen, and others that are outright scams. Some work and collect the same info, but just charge three times the price.

Whether it is Vietnam or any country, ALWAYS go to the country's official page and double check the site address. Double check with Google. Here is the site for Vietnam. It is $25 for a single-entry visa or $50 for multi-entry. One means you can leave and come back, the other means if you leave your visa ends. Single entry is likely all you need, but just plan accordingly.

Also, be sure to get the Grab app. It works just like Uber/Uber Eats in the States. You can order food and rides with it.

It takes a little getting used to for some, but you need to get used to the idea of riding on the back of a motorcycle or scooter. There will be a car option available, but selection is thin and more expensive. Scooters are king here and 90% of the traffic will be scooters and bikes. They are also much less expensive.

Also, never, under any circumstances take a ride from someone offering you a lift off the app. For very practical purposes, it is just better to use your credit card whenever you can because your bank is likely going to charge you fees for taking cash out, so why waste that cash when you don't have to? Second, it is just safer—the app tracks it and you get limited liability. Third, the main issue: 100% of the time they will try to charge you WAY more. And the scammer's negotiation skills are comically bad. My first time ordering a Grab, the app said it would be about 25,000 VND ($.95). A driver came up offering me a ride and I was willing to hear him out and told him where I was going, and he said 200,000 VND ($7.50). I chuckled and showed him the app offering me 25,000 VND and declined. Then he dropped the price to 50,000 VND ($1.90). Like... dude... sure you dropped your price, but why would I listen to any offers over 25,000? From then on, I didn't even bother listening to offers.

One last piece of advice is the 500,000 VND ($19) note, the biggest in Vietnam looks a lot like the 20,000 VND ($.75) note, so keep your eye out.
